Nos baristas à travers le monde: l'Australie

Our baristas around the world: Australia

Why Sydney isn't the kingdom of Starbucks

When I arrived in Sydney, I expected to see Starbucks on every corner, like in most major cities around the world. To my surprise, it took me a little over a month to see one! It seems the giant chain has been sidelined in favor of smaller, independent cafes. Several reasons appear to explain this.

Firstly, the arrival of Italian migrants in the early 1950s introduced the art of coffee and forms the cornerstone of the unique coffee culture still found in Australia today. Visiting various cafes across Australia, I quickly realized that the baristas were passionate and dedicated to their craft. They take the time to make each cup of coffee carefully and are attentive to their customers.

Secondly, it's well known that Australians are laid-back , and it seems that independent cafes cater to their needs better than a giant like Starbucks. Indeed, Australians love to socialize over a good cup of coffee, whether with friends, colleagues, or family. They like to take their time and relax while sipping a good coffee.

Thirdly, Australians are becoming increasingly knowledgeable about coffee culture. Many " cupping " events (similar to wine tastings, but for coffee) are offered by independent roasters.

My best finds

Needless to say, Australia is a goldmine when it comes to coffee. Here are my two favorite spots in Sydney to enjoy a great cup of coffee (and grab a little something to eat)!

Harry's Bondi

2/136 Wairoa Ave, Bondi Beach, Sydney, NSW 2026

Considered one of the best places for For brunch , Harry's is definitely a must-try on your next visit to Bondi Beach ! The atmosphere is warm, the food is colorful, and the coffee is more than delicious. It's definitely worth a visit if you want to enjoy a cold drip or a flat white under the sun!

Bare Naked Bowl

Shop 1, 145 Macpherson St, Bronte, Sydney, NSW 2024

2/41 Market Lane, Manly, Sydney, NSW 2095

This superfood cafe is known for its acai bowls, which are as beautiful as they are delicious. I fell in love with this café the first time I walked in. Despite the daily crowds, the staff make sure to satisfy every customer. They offer coffees single origin Freshly roasted, and let me tell you, they are absolutely delicious. What could be better than sipping a good coffee while eating a smoothie bowl on the seaside?
